Investing in Mental Health: A Strategic Approach for Businesses

This week is mental health awareness week.

Running between 13th – 19th May organisations are spreading awareness around Mental Health, how it impacts people and what can be done to help.

This is amazing, but not enough. We talk a lot about understanding a Digital Culture and part of that we believe is how Digital can improve and impact Mental Health. The conversation and consideration for mental health should run throughout an organisation’s long-term strategy and should be invested in constantly.

“There’s no question that workplace wellness is worth it. The only question is whether you’re going to do it today or tomorrow.”

Warren Buffet, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway.

How does supporting mental health benefit your business?

Support your staff show that they matter.

Supporting your team’s wellbeing demonstrates genuine care. Providing useful tools and a safe space for stress management shows authenticity. When employees feel valued, they are more likely to be authentic themselves, enhancing wellbeing and benefiting business. Authenticity fosters openness and honesty, improving workplace relationships and communication throughout the organisation.

Creates a great work environment.

Creating a great workplace goes beyond early finishes or holiday treats. While such perks are appreciated and contribute to happiness, it’s essential to prioritize employees’ mental wellbeing to ensure they feel truly valued and cared for.

Boost employee engagement.

Stress negatively impacts engagement. But happy employees boost business performance, and according to Forbes, such workplaces are 21% more profitable.

Attract and retain the best talent.

Company culture is becoming increasingly important to prospective employees. As more businesses strive to be top workplaces, a culture that supports employees’ mental wellbeing is essential for attracting and retaining the best talent.

Encourage creativity and innovation.

Creativity and innovation are valuable traits that can be hindered by stress. Supporting employee wellbeing and helping reduce stress can enhance creativity and innovation, while also boosting intrinsic motivation.

Planning in wellness into your business strategy

In 2024, mental health issues are estimated to cost employers £1,230 per employee annually in an average office-based environment. Integrating wellbeing into the workplace is essential for any modern business. While it may not yield immediate profit, neglecting a positive work environment can lead to significant negative repercussions, especially for smaller businesses. Prioritising employee wellbeing is an investment in long-term success and stability.

“Running a business with unhealthy and unhappy employees is like trying to drive a car with a bad engine. It may eventually get you where you want to go, but the trip will be difficult, and you’ll waste a lot of time and resources.”

Sheana Abrahams, Health & Wellness Head of GetSmarter
